山东十一运夺金推荐:Reflecting on LGBTQ+ Rights 50 Years After Stonewall

The trans community has played a vital role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, but there’s still work to be done.

This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, when patrons at a gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village fought back against a police raid. One of those patrons was Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender activist who was celebrating her birthday at the Stonewall Inn. The protests went on for six days, effectively giving birth to the modern gay rights movement. Today, the Stonewall Inn is a national monument, and it’s important that we all honor this history. But looking back now is to have a bittersweet realization not unlike that of many older feminists when they began encountering #MeToo or #TimesUp hashtags on social media: What has actually changed since we started marching?

For LGBTQ+ people, the answer to that question varies, depending on whom you are. I, for example, am a cisgender (which means my gender matches the one a doctor assigned to me at birth based on my genitalia), upper-middle-class gay white man—so I’m comparatively privileged. Somewhere in the course of our fight for equality, many gay men and lesbians left transgender people behind as we struggled for things like the right to marry, adopt children, and even hold a job without the fear of being fired on the basis of our sexual orientation.

"What has actually changed since we started marching?"

And now, when we have cause to celebrate some of the hard-won rights that are enshrined in U.S. law—the Supreme Court struck down state bans on same-sex marriage in 2015 and on gay adoption in 2017—we’re witnessing terrible things happening to other members of our community, as the federal government turns hostile to their very existence. The Trump administration preposterously suggested we narrow the legal definition of gender as “immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth,” and is steadily whittling away protections granted under Title IX, including the right of students to use bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

While most of us read or skim these headlines from the comfort of our own homes, transgender people are facing historic rates of harassment and discrimination. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 26 trans people were killed in 2018. Since 2013, no fewer than 128 trans individuals have been lost to violence. But besides safety issues, transgender people are also at a disproportionately greater risk for mental health issues. They suffer from shockingly high rates of self-harm, with one national survey showing that 41 percent of trans or gender-nonconforming people have attempted suicide. (The national average is 4.6 percent.) Three in four trans people have been subjected to workplace bias, and one in five have been homeless.

Of course, the solution to the discrimination against transgender people cannot be brought about by people in the LGBTQ+ community alone. “Allies help free those who are marginalized, who have fewer resources, to work on what they need to liberate themselves,” says Janet Mock, a writer, producer, and director of Ryan Murphy’s history- making FX series, Pose, and a trans activist.“Your duty is to leverage your access, resources, talents, and privilege.”

"Allies help free those who are marginalized, who have fewer resources, to work on what they need to liberate themselves."

There are a number of ways to achieve this, beginning with something as simple as learning the correct pronouns to use. Many trans people prefer the gender-neutral “they,” and, no, they don’t want to hear how uncomfortable or awkward it is for you to learn how to address them properly. Another way involves the political candidates you support, especially in local elections, which in turn often determine school-board policies (and, thus, impact transgender students). Finally, you can use the power of the purse. Most major LGBTQ+ organizations are not run or led by trans people, so it’s important to support those that are. The Audre Lorde Project, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Transgender Law Center, and Trans Lifeline all fit this category. Each has its own way of helping the community (some through counseling, others through legal work, and still others through political advocacy), but all are worthy of your donations.

We’re not even close to scratching the surface when it comes to LGBTQ+ equality because their issues have been ignored for far too long. But by addressing them, when we look back on today 50 years from now, we’ll know that we were on the right side of history.
